For me, it started with a Kleenex box that my dad rescued from the trash while volunteering at a clean-up day at our local historical society back in the 1970s. The box contained a bisque head and a bunch of body parts. My dad figured that his daughter, with her artistic tendencies and emerging “math brain” could make something out of this stuff.
I figured out how all the pieces went together and took the doll to an antique fair where a dealer identified her as an EJ3 Jumeau and appraised her at $4,000. Boom! I was hooked.
I was lucky enough to develop my interest and knowledge of the doll world with the help of mentors like Dorothy McGonnigle, Sylvia Christianson, and other experts, as well as membership in the Boston Doll Study Group, the Granite State Doll Club and the United Federation of Doll Clubs. I love to share what I’ve learned with fellow collectors and have taught numerous workshops on shoe making, the history of Bru Dolls, and pattern drafting.
I use my education and career as a civil engineer/tech manager and my interest in drawing and painting to restore dolls and preserve them for another generation. Some collectors shy away from imperfect dolls, but I love bringing them back to life.
I’m the proud mom of three strapping young men, a houseful of terriers, and am the current resident of the mid-century house my dad built (yes, I do have boomerang Formica countertops!)
I had a stint as a competitive ballroom dancer, love horseback riding, and the history of the colonial town where I grew up and still live. I also play flute in our local symphony group.
